So Hank Williams was an Indian,
but John Kennedy wasn't.
and Chuck Berry is an Indian,
but Michael Jackson ain't.
And street people are Indians,
but presidents of the United States ain't.
and Pancho Villa was an Indian,
but Che Guevera was not.
And Leonard Peltier was an Indian
and the FBI ain't.
And Willie Nelson is an Indian
but the president of the Baylor University
and unions full of cops ain't no Indians.
And Los Angeles is an Indian,
but New York City ain't.
And Fort Worth, Texas, is an Indian,
but Dallas, Texas, ain't.
And Africa is an Indian,
but Europe ain't.
And baseball is an Indian,
but football ain't.
And Crazy Horse was an Indian,
but General Custer wasn't.
And Sitting Bull was an Indian,
And the Indian policemen
who killed him were also Indian.
And Quanah Parker was an Indian
and so was Cynthia Ann Parker, who was Quanah's all-white mother.
And poetry is an Indian,
and journalism ain't
and proper puncuation ain't Indian.
And circles are Indians,
and random lines are Indians.
But straight lines won't never ever be Indian.
And red meat is Indian,
and corn is Indian,
and potatoes are Indians,
and fry bread is Indian.
And health food stores try
hard to be Indian.
And living is Indian,
but expecting to live forever ain't, INDIAN.
