Judy says:
Idea came after reading Peter Matthiesen's book, At Play in the Fields of the Lord. Different items in the painting come from my interpretation of what Matthiesen mentions in his book.
Breaking down the painting, first the following: left side, "A MAN WITHOUT HIS PASAPORTE," on pocket below on image of Matthiesen's face. At top of painting, three radios, "Radios are high commodity in the JUNGLE." Above two of the radios printed, "DEAD RADIO;" above centered third radio, painted music notes which reveals that one still plays. Middle image, slightly to the right interpretation of the commandant; written on top of his cap, "A COMANDANTE IS SOME KIND OF TERRIBLE JUNGLE BEAST." Right in front of his face is: "BELCH." At bottom of painting is printed, "A VACATION IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD." The whole background is encircled by large jungle leaves.
Rita says:
The paper has been accidentally peeled from the upper left corner. This picture was in a heap of miscellany brought back to Dallas from the Valera house in 2003.
