Judy says:
I painted this picture first for Roxy Gordon's grandmother, the late Sarah Jane Bedell Bomar, 1973. I provided a black frame for the painting, which she kept hanging on her bedroom wall, until she passed away February, 1999. I reduced painting to be used as an illustration for a poem in Minerva Allen's book, Like Spirits of the Past Trying to Break Out and Walk to the West,© 1974, Minerva Allen, Lodge Pole, Montana.

To make the painting reflect storytelling which was done at night, with a fire going inside a tipi, I painted shadows mainly behind two of the elders.
